Jacquard Socks Knitted with Double-Cylinder Machines

Holonomic, a vivid personality fashion clothing brand in China, has made a short video to promote its designer socks, made with double-cylinder knitting machines by De-Yuan Knitting, the proud supplier.

Sock knitting machines are highly specialized circular knitting machines specific to the products made on them. These machines can use any type of yarn or fiber to produce hosiery and socks made to shape, size, and performance criteria. Circular knitting machines always produce a tube-shaped fabric. They exist in different sizes or diameters, depending on the field of application. The needles and sinkers in these machines are arranged in a circle. The machines can be divided into two different types, depending on the number of sets of needles:

•  single set: plain;
•  two sets: rib, interlock, spacer fabric.

Both single set and double set machines also exist as Jacquard machines, which are needed for special designs. In comparison, single-cylinder and double-cylinder machines each has its characteristics.

Machines that possess just one set of needles are only able to produce plain-knitted structures. The socks made with a single-cylinder machine have plain texture, and can come with very colorful designs and patterns. However, the more colors are involved, the more complicated the patterns are, the more loose threads there will be inside the socks. Sometimes the loops formed by the threads would become obstacles that prevent toes from sliding into the socks smoothly – Therefore an additional process may be required to cut open the loops.

The double-cylinder circular sock machine possesses two sets of needles that operates in upper and lower cylinders. Currently double-cylinder machines are allowed to knit less number of colors on the same sock. However it is more versatile with the surface organizations. In addition to regular plain texture, more complicated textures can be achieved, such as ribs, interlocks, and twisted ribs. The inner side of socks knitted with double-cylinder machines looks much neater, as there is no loose thread at all.

From the picture below with two socks inside out, it is easy to tell the difference: loose threads on the inside surface, and the number of colors.
